Chinmaya, Farhan, Satirtha win titles in Orissa Open

Top seed Chinmaya Pradhan won the men’s open singles title in the KDTA Orissa Open Tennis Tournament at Bhubaneswar Club here today. A trainee of Gurukul Tennis Academy, Chinmaya beat eighth seed Satirtha Patnaik in the final by straight sets to receive the top prize of Rs 5,000. He, however, missed a title double by going down in the men’s open doubles final.

Patnaik, a dentist, and his partner Farhan Ali capitalised on their rich experience to overcome the spirited challenge of Chinmaya and his BJB Collegemate Vijay Avinandan in the final, via super tie-break. Farhan, who is also a leading coach, clinched a double in style by winning the mixed doubles title with Mayuri Deka as partner. Despite playing with an injured right hand, he made a memorable return to competitive tennis, after a gap of nine years.

BSNL General Manager J Ganta and Biranchi Mohanty capped the three-day tournament by winning the veteran doubles crown convincingly. State Agriculture Secretary U P Singh gave away the trophies and cash prizes at the closing ceremony. Host KDTA president Madhusudan Padhi and secretary Bijay Ketan Mishra were present on the occasion.
